2016 marks the 60th year of the existence of the Uganda Law Society and in recognition of this momentous milestone, the Society organized a grand formal Black Tie Dinner at the Kampala Serena Hotel Gardens on the evening of Friday the 16th of December 2016.

The Uganda Law Society, a fraternal organisation that represents the collective interests of legal practitioners in Uganda, was established in 1956 by the Uganda Law Society Act [now Cap 267] which came into force on the 7th December 1956. Despite the various ebbs and flows of Uganda’s socio-political circumstances, the Society has been in continuous existence since then.

Katende Ssempebwa & Company Advocates, the oldest law firm in the country having been established in 1969, shares in a lot of the Society’s intricate history and was proud to take part in the event marking the Society’s Diamond Jubilee. The Dinner begun with an introductory cocktail, then came the speeches and recognitions of various members of the society and the evening’s festivities culminated in a splendid dinner.

The event was graced by numerous speakers who included distinguished and pre-eminent legal and other personalities such as the President of Uganda; His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who was the Guest of Honour, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Honourable Kahinda Ottafire, the Attorney General Mr. William Byaruhanga, the President of the Uganda Law Society Mr. Francis Gimara amongst others.

Katende, Ssempebwa and Company Advocates was recognised as a key contributor to legal practice in Uganda. The KATS team was commended for standing up for the rights of Ugandans and specifically for leading the charge in the elimination of Mandatory Death sentences so as to ensure justice and to honour the ethos ushered in by the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. Our Professor Edward Fredrick Sempebwa was recognised for his notable contribution to the Society as a past President and was commended for his continued service to the Profession today as a member of the Law Council and leader in the field of legal practice.

Professor Edward Fredrick Sempebwa was also later awarded the Uganda Law Society Life Time Achievement award for maintaining high ethics and moral probity throughout his practice, having a significant-positive impact on both the bar and the bench for which he has garnered respect from both his peers and judicial officers alike, handling several landmark cases that have had an impact on legal practice in Uganda, achieving regional and international acclaim throughout his career for his outstanding performance, achieving an excellent practice record across all the fields of law and mentoring and grooming younger lawyers in the practice of law.

This event was a change for the legal fraternity as it presented an opportunity for amiable interaction of learned friends, the sharing of jokes and breaking of bread in remembrance of the past while setting pace for the future. At Katende Ssempebwa and Company Advocates we commend the Uganda Law Society for its hard work and achievements in uniting the profession and commit, going forward to play our part as members of the Legal Profession. We also look forward to celebrating the next twenty, thirty and one hundred year milestones with the Uganda Law Society.
